BLUE INFINITY was Uli Jon Roth’s first band.

Albums to date: unfortunately no recordings seem to have survived from this time.

The first line-up consisted of:

Hubert Rybold - vocals
Bernd Kloss - rhythm guitar, vocals
Joerg Hoffman - drums
Fritze Winterfeld - bass
Ulrich Roth - lead guitar

”Blue Infinity was founded some time late Summer 1968.
The band that preceded them was a three-piece rhythm & blues band, “The Somethings”,
which consisted of Uli’s slightly older friends, including Bernd Kloss, who was the first person
to get Uli interested in guitar playing. Uli used to tag along to their gigs, which were mainly
dance evenings. At that time he had not yet started to play the guitar, but had taken up the
classical trumpet instead.

Below is a picture of “The Somethings” taken by U.J.R. in late 1967.
The members from left to right are Fritze Winterfeld - Fritz Randow (later Eloy and Saxon) -
and Uli’s then-best friend Bernd Kloss, who was very influential in getting Uli acquainted
with the music of the Beatles as well as a lot of rhythm & blues music.

After “The Somethings” broke up, a new band emerged which was “Blue Infinity”.
Uli had taken up the electric guitar just prior to the summer after having first started to play the bass, albeit on an electric guitar with only four strings. After his friend, Bernd Kloss accidentally broke the neck of this Hopf guitar, Uli got a second-hand Framus guitar as a present from his father for his confirmation in May 1968. (This was the instrument he played right up to 1971, when he got
his first Fender Stratocaster guitar).

The band gave their first ever concert on December 14 that year just prior to Uli’s 14th birthday. The band performed for an entire evening to an audience who had come to dance at the Gemeindehaus - Elisabeth Church - Langenhagen.

The music “Blue Infinity” played that night consisted of songs by “Cream”, “The Shadows”, “John Mayall & Bluesbreakers” and other rhythm & blues artists. The first song they played live was “The Rise And Fall Of Flingle Bunt” by the “Shadows”. Other songs included “Apache”, “Sunshine Of Your Love”, “Hideaway” and many others.
Uli in his own words: “on that first evening I was not apprehensive at all, although I guess I should have been - instead, I clearly remember taking to the stage like a fish to the water - I felt right at home there. It was exciting and I remember my first attempts at improvising some solos that night, just feeling my way and getting deeply into the music. It just felt great...”
