After “The Somethings” broke up, a new band emerged which was “Blue Infinity”. Uli had taken up the electric guitar just prior to the summer after having first started to play the bass, albeit on an electric guitar with only four strings. After his friend, Bernd Kloss accidentally broke the neck of this Hopf guitar, Uli got a second-hand Framus guitar as a present from his father for his confirmation in May 1968. (This was the instrument he played right up to 1971, when he got his first Fender Stratocaster guitar).
The band gave their first ever concert on December 14 that year just prior to Uli’s 14th birthday. The band performed for an entire evening to an audience who had come to dance at the Gemeindehaus - Elisabeth Church - Langenhagen.
The music “Blue Infinity” played that night consisted of songs by “Cream”, “The Shadows”, “John Mayall & Bluesbreakers” and other rhythm & blues artists. The first song they played live was “The Rise And Fall Of Flingle Bunt” by the “Shadows”. Other songs included “Apache”, “Sunshine Of Your Love”, “Hideaway” and many others. Uli in his own words: “on that first evening I was not apprehensive at all, although I guess I should have been - instead, I clearly remember taking to the stage like a fish to the water - I felt right at home there. It was exciting and I remember my first attempts at improvising some solos that night, just feeling my way and getting deeply into the music. It just felt great...”
