Uli Jon Roth had already written several pieces for Electric Sun during his late tenure with the Scorpions. The 1978 tour of Japan, which consequently led to the release of “Tokyo Tapes”, was Uli’s official good-bye from the band. But long before this he had already decided that it was time for him to move on and he had told the band wanted to leave.

One of the first steps for Uli was to look for a drummer in London.
It was a strange coincidence that Uli’s manager placed an advert in Melody Maker the very
same week that Scorpions were advertising for a guitarist in July. The adverts were almost
identical in size and appeared side by side in the same issue unbeknown to either party.

About 100 guitar hopefuls were being auditioned to find a replacement for Uli by poor
Scorpions, but with little result. They later turned to a guitarist from Hanover, Mathias Jabs.
Uli was more successful in his search for a suitable drummer. Three exhausting
days of auditions, at which his brother Zeno kindly assisted on the bass, (giving him blisters
on his delicate guitar player fingers) resulted in choosing Clive Edwards (ex-Pat Travers Band). He then asked Ule Ritgen whom he had known for quite some time to play the bass.
Ule had been in a band with Zeno and Achim Kirschning, called "Black Angel" before.
