Uli then proceeded to check out a series of studios in London with his
amplifier and ended up picking none other than the famous Olympic Studios in
Barnes, which had a much loved large upstairs recording room. Some of Uli’s most
favourite albums had been recorded there a decade earlier, among them “Axis:
Bold As Love” by Jimi Hendrix and the track “All Along The Watchtower”. Uli
instantly fell in love with the acoustics which were not as dead sounding as the
ones he had previously encountered.
The recordings went well, but
Electric Sun were still was looking for a singer. A couple of people
auditioned, but it proved difficult to find someone who would fit into the
unusual sonic tapestries Uli was creating with his guitar. Time was running out,
so it finally was decided Uli would sing the songs himself, (after all, he had
sung lead vocals on various Scorpions classics such as “Drifting Sun”, “Dark
Lady”, “Polar Nights” etc.) Uli though, actually felt that this was to be
somewhat of a compromise, but on the other hand the band had never set out to be
a commercial entity as such.
Most of the "Earthquake" album had been
recorded during November 1978 and it was completed by January 1979. Monika
Dannemann contributed two classic paintings for the artwork. Later on she was to
paint the covers for each one of the Electric Sun albums that were to follow -
each of them masterpieces in their own right.
