The name G 3 means Three Guitars and is the brainchild of Joe Satriani. The live format is employed by G3 is basically always the same in that three outstanding guitarists are performing separately in the course of a single concert. The show always ends with a jam-session where all three players share the stage simultaneously and jam together.

Joe Satriani has been very successful in touring this format for a number of years with varying players. These have included Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, Michael Schenker, Robert Fripp and others.

Joe asked Uli to join the G3 for their European tour in 1998 together with Michael Schenker. U.J.R. had not been on tour for a very long time then (13 years), because he had moved away from what he used to call “the rock circus”. But by the time when Joe’s invitation came, he felt it might be good to play a tour again and he accepted gladly.

U.J.R. Line-up:

Don Airey - keys
Clive Bunker - drums
Liz Vandall - vocals
Francois Garny - bass

David Van Landing - vocals during the onstage jam, which consisted of “Voodoo Chile” by Jimi Hendrix and “The Thrill Is Gone” by B.B. King)

Uli’ favourite shows of the tour are listed below:

London, Wembley Arena with Brian May
Cardiff, International Arena
Brussels, Foret National
Paris, Le Zenith with Patrik Rondat

Turin - Monster Of Rock with Deep Purple, Dream Theatre, etc.

His least favourite two shows were in Glasgow and Zurich.
