Monika was a powerful and truly gifted artist in her own right. At the time she met Jimi,in 1969, she had been an ice skating teacher in Geneva, Switzerland. Previously she had studied skating in England under some of the world’s most renowned teachers and Olympic champions such as Shoukje Dykstra. She had also taken part in the German ice skating championships and won many prizes and medals in her career. Monika had started her training as early as five years old and was renowned for her iron discipline when it came to practising difficult jumps and figures. The above pictures were taken around the time Monika met Jimi. It was Jimi, who after seeing Monika’s paintings, strongly urged her to become a full-time painter in oils, because he immediately sensed her outstanding talent. Just before he died, Jimi asked her to paint the artwork for his next album and he drew some sketches for her, which she later turned into oil paintings.
