Dear Mr Roth

Could you please tell what exact setup are you using on ''Scherzo Alla Paganini'' ? This is the best driven electric guitar tone I have ever heard. I tried many different things but couldn't get even close to it...

Thank you

I have seen a DVD of Brussels 9/21 1990 on ebay. I am curious about it. As after 1985's BTAS and the U.S. tour it seemed like you disappeared until the Jimi tribute show. I met you in Milwaukee in 2004 and it was great but I couldn't see you this year because of personal family upheaval. Your music's in my head every day and seems to come to me at just the right times. I think a lot of people wonder what you were doing then. All I've surmised is you were learning a great deal w/computer graphics, playing the electric piano and continuing to develop on the Sky guitar. Glad to read you're out and about again.

Hey Uli
This time I want to tell you that the only songs which inspire me so much are the songs of Sorpions years. Fly to the rainbow, Polar noghts, Drifting Sun, Robot man , In trance and other are excellent. Why you left Scorpions? I believe that this decision changes the world of rock without any doubt I believe that with you the band wouldn't change so much and you would have the chance to explore a diferent kind of music. My dream is that Uli and Scorpions one day will return in the originall metal.Krautrock,Progressive rock and pschedelic rock combined with elements of 70s metal is the best combination for the best band ever the scorpions of 70s. You with rudolf and klaus were the best line ever.
Thank you , Dimitris

Dear Uli,

About a week or so ago, I posted a question for you regarding Marshall amps. Let this be an extention to that question. From my research I know that Marshall introduced slightly different versions of the same amp depending on continent/country tat the amp was supposed to be exported to. The amps made for England had only two switches on the front pannell and a Bulgin power connector (plug) on the back. The same model made for the USA had three switches and a regular two-prong cable. From your experience, do you see any differences in sound between the models made for the USA and Europe? Some of these amps have so called lay down power transformers, some had stand-up transformers. Any differences in sound between these two? Which tubes do you like the best? Also, there are quite a few modified amps. Have you ever encountered a decent sounding modded amp?

Hope to see you soon playing live, and hope to shake your hand this time! It would certaily be an honour!

Thanks again,

Janusz

Dear Uli,

Before I start with my question, let me mention that you are most definitely one of the best guitar players I’ve ever seen. Your music, your sound, your virtuosity, your stage persona are absolutely unbelievable. When I think of a true Star, I think of you!

Uli, I know that you’ve been using Marshalls extensively throughout the years and I know that the Marshalls that you use are the old ones. I do understand why; the sound they produce is the best sound ever, that’s why I love them myself. From what I can understand about Marshalls, every one of them has its own “personality”, and sounds different from another one – even if, sometimes, they are only one serial number apart. Some of them sound really good, and some of them are just …”dead”. I’m looking for an old Marshall head – but unfortunately they are not easy to find. One of the sources is eBay, but the disadvantage of it is that you can’t actually hear the amp. My question is: What should I look for when shopping for a Marshall? There were quite a few different types/models of Marshalls; which model sounded the best? From what I know, the power transformer plays a major role if it comes to sound, but is it anything else? (I know, sound is something very subjective, but since I know I like your sound very much, I value your opinion greatly.) Do you still buy old Marshalls? If yes, what’s your source?

Thank you for your time,

Janusz

Hi Uli! I hope your tour is going well.

I submitted a question a couple of weeks ago on this board and I want to amend it. With the "fly on!" spirit in mind, this is what I have to say:

I've recently started getting into "Why?" Well, it comes down to this in my mind. Is it "Why?" or "Why." A lot of the answers are in the questions we ask. Do we really want to know "why?" or are we asking "why." My motto is "Minds are like parachutes; they only work when they are open."
Just when I think my mind is open, I am challenged with another closed minded thought process possibly thrown in there.

I think I know what you meant by "Fly on!" when you wrote that on my good luck hat.

I want to take the time again to thank you. God blessed me with your inspirational art, music, thought provoking words, philosophies and all that lies before and beyond. I love your spirit, Uli. Really. There are not too many lights in the dark and I must tell you that you've been a light for me.

I was originally drawn to your music during the first era (Scorps)...Many, many people over a long period of time (20+ years) have always made their negative remarks and tried to persuade me away from my "taste”. I didn't let them and I'm so glad. I was just 17 years old (now 35) when I was drawn to your music. I realize now that you spoke to me or a higher power spoke to me through you as a sound. Now, I am just getting into all of your art and everything and you've inspired me to tap into other realms on this quest of/for "Why?"

I am getting deeply into organic foods and such, holistic, homeopathic and whatever can be derived in the purest form from our Mother Earth to prevent, heal, treat and promote optimal health for the mind, body and spirit for myself and family. I am injured severely from several "accidents?" I am a musician (bass, guitar, keys, percussion, vocals). I speak for myself here. I feel led to perform "Yellow Raven". My band is going through trials and tribulations. I just left one band last week. Now, there's a "why?" vs. "why." situation. I am also working on original material that I am not sure what to do with yet.

I know your time doesn't permit to R.S.V.P. "yes" on all the invitations you receive. I yearn to spend time with you. I am finding answers to a lot of my questions by just exploring all the info I can in all of your art and work. This website has only confirmed what I felt when I only "listened" to your music in the first era. It's like I've known you and your message all of these years.

If I ask a question here, I can only assume that the answer is already in front of me and I must choose to "why?" it or "why." it. hee hee (got to keep a sense of humor : ))

Question: Any additional thoughts on "WHY?" versus "WHY." It's kind of serendipitous that I just heard your song "why" for the first time at B.B. King's in New York on 5/16.

In the meantime, I will my best to "fly on!" as you already said to me and I will remain a student forever. I'd like to be able to teach others...I had a recent opportunity to. I live in a small town. But, the world is a small place. What took place was a murder of a local musician/teacher at the hands of his own brother...It's violent and sick as you can imagine...his brother threw his body parts out along a local highway. One of the deceased’s' students was a 16 year-old boy that played guitar at his funeral. He came to my bands' practice on Fri night with his parents. The lead guitarist and keyboardist in my band are married and loaned a Pignose amplifier to him for the service. LONG STORY SHORT a particular band participant initiated an "ugly" scene in front of this kid. 2 pcs of the band (vocals and drums) left...I just continued to play and we went from a 5 piece to a 3 pc band in a matter of 20 minutes...I am happy to announce that if I wasn't inspired by you, I would not have contributed anything peaceful to the world by my actions.

The same goes with the night at B.B. King's in NYC. I had a woman standing next to me that repeated hip butted me and made it well know that she would get violent if I invaded her space or competed to get closer to you in the audience. As you know, there's usually a "war" to get up front in a general admission situation. I refused to fight in the war- especially in front of you. My thoughts were that I didn't want a catfight that night as you and your band were performing. I just took a step back and away and told her, "Here, it's all yours." She was appearing to be SO into you, but how could she be if she was so willing to fight? She purposely pushed me a countless amount of times with her hips and got eye contact with me as if to say that I would be hurt if I got any closer to her. It wasn't hard for me at all but I did battle with the thought of putting her in her place...But, she but herself in her own place if you know what I mean. It wasn't my war. I was her personal war.

Well, sorry to go on and on...I could go on forever and probably will...so, I will end my words here for now.

Again, thanks. I'd love to hear back from you with your thoughts to my questions if you see any that I am not addressing...

Fly on! Uli!

Warm wishes and respectfully yours,
Marjorie

Uli, I was at the Chicago show on May 15th. 2006. Once again, I was thrilled to here the magic sounds from your guitar. I have longed for the day to hear some of the Scorpions material that you covered that evening such as Pictured life, Dark lady,Fly to the rainbow and Polar nights. The Hendrix stuff also was great. I did notice during the first part of the show that you were having some problems with your amps and one of your pedals, I was wondering what the issues were?
When Francis had the amp problem you asked the crowd if they wanted to hear anything while the bass amp was being fixed, I yelled, "Polar Nights", you said, "that requires the bass". I just wanted to clarify what I meant, I thought you could have picked a rhythm with the drummer while the amp was being fixed like the drum/guitar solo in Polar Nights from Tokyo Tapes or the Fireworks Jam. That picking style that is done in those two songs is just increadible!!!! Thanks again Uli

Hello Uli!
Where do I start? There doesn't seem to be a beginning or end to my thoughts and questions. I am sure you will agree that we are on the same quest.I will attempt to communicate at a level in which is considerate to your time. (there's not enough time to learn, explore, try, and question here on earth!?) My background: born in New Jersey, USA in 1970, picked up bass in 1985, discovered your music shortly thereafter, injured 3 times in the height of my musical pursuit. I've asked WHY!? After pondering the question and battling with the frustration and picking up all kinds of negative ways to cope along the way, I found some internal peace and strength to work through my handicaps. (I am trying to apply this to every aspect of my life and others around me too )I can't hold a coffee cup in my left hand, but I tapped into an energy to play and learn my instrument. If I wasn't drawn to you, I don't know where I would be right now. I just want to thank you for being true and dedicated to your art, pursuit of the truth and sharing all of it. As far as I can see, you have not faltered and you have inspired many. I had the opportunity and honor to experience your live performance for the first time at BB King's in NYC on Tues 5/16. I stood before you and your band in tears the entire show. With eloquence, your spirit and the source of your positive energy is revealed through all of your art. I haven't had the opportunity (time) to explore all of it yet along with many other journeys but I'm look forward to it. There's no going back to the old version of me. I am currently working with 2 bands right now. There is a hat that I wear when I play...so far it seems to be my "good luck" hat. You and Francis signed that for me.Thanks! I couldn't figure out what you wrote beneath your autograph until the next day. It clearly says "Fly on!" I think I know what that means so I will do my best! I don't know where the road is going to take us and I am not sure if this band is home for me. For now, it is. I am getting into recording and exploring my creativity. So far, I've been a plug n play cover bassist. With you as my major influence, inspiration and technical standard so to speak along with bits and pieces from other sources of the same, I only hope that I can "fly on!"
You are a genious and such a gem. You have enough talent, achievements and etc...that could potentially give someone the impression that they are a god. But, instead, you are unpretentious and so friendly. Thank you!
Q: I told you that my band and I are working on playing "Yellow Raven" as a cover. Did you say you would like to come see my band when we play it? If so, we and/or I, would be honored. There were hundreds of people standing in line waiting to meet you and I was quite stressed out when I met you because it was the last event that I ever expected in my lifetime, so needless to say my memory failed me. I am one of your students from afar and I dream of being able to just sit with you and talk about everything one day. Maybe we can do that on Earth or somewhere else one day. Until then, you're never far away. Again, THANK YOU!

Hi there Mr Roth.
What equipment did U use with the Scorpions?
Not the Marshalls, but what where the stompboxes and pickups that U used?
I got all the old records with Scorpions, and today I'm still amazed of the sound that U cranked out.
To me U always seems to get the perfect electric tone, and it would B fun to know what U used in the old days.
Don't get me wrong here Mr Roth, U still got the tone, and U R still the King.
Best Regards Jörgen

I have been in contact with Jeff Jagins from the Sku Academy website for the last year requesting how to purchase tickets for the upcoming Sky Academy in Los Angeles in May. Jeff has not been able to provide a form to fill out to either purchase tickets for the concerts or to apply as a Sky Academy student. I am frustrated in that i will not be able to attend because this information is not being made available for some reason. Is it still too early to provide this info? My friend Kevin Izer, who you met before the House of Blues gig here (and took a picture with him -- arm in arm) is hoping to attend as a gifted student to expand his knowledge and skills and I am an afficionado who loves your music ever since the Scorpions days (I attended the Reseda show back in '85 -- remember my e-mail a few years ago?).
I hope this can be resolved quickly so that Kevin and I do not miss out on this once in a lifetime opportunity!!! Thanks, Uli! Hope to see you in May...

Hello Uli,

First and formost, thanks for all the years of great and true music! Secondly, where can I buy your CDs and DVDs? I have tried contacting Sky Arts with no luck. You see, I lost most everything with Hurricane Katrina and would reallly like to replace the signed copies I had purchased through your site.

Thanks and good luck with the academy!

Keith
