Early Works

Madonna in Blue

1990 · Oil on canvas / wood, 41 × 41 cm

This was my first oil portrait, painted as a Christmas present for my mother in 1990.

This was my first oil portrait, painted as a Christmas present for my mother in 1990. It is based on a black-and-white photograph my father took of her the year after I was born. I clearly remember playing with the kitten on my bed when I was about two or three years old. It is one of my earliest memories, and perhaps the reason I have always been so fond of purring felines.

I painted the picture in my upstairs studio room at Little Thatch, Seaford, using my Trident mixing desk as a makeshift easel. For reasons I can no longer explain, I chose to paint the portrait on a chessboard which I overpainted and primed with gesso. The work remains technically unfinished: the cool blue-green tones were meant to serve as an underpainting. I then intended to glace the face and hands with flesh tones. However, when I saw the outcome, I liked it as it was and decided to leave the picture in that state. Hence the title, Madonna in Blue.

Peacebringer

1989 · Oil on canvas, 85 × 100 cm

Peacebringer was my first winged horse in oils, painted at Little Thatch in Seaford in 1989.

Peacebringer was my first winged horse in oils, painted at Little Thatch in Seaford in 1989. I have always been fascinated by flying creatures with large wings, and none more so than the magnificent, mysterious Pegasus. Here, Pegasus appears as a messenger from another dimension, landing near the shoreline. He is a bringer of peace and inspiration. A few years later, I used this image for the cover of my Prologue to the Symphonic Legends CD.

Visions in Colour

Europa Ex Favilla

2024 · Oil on canvas / wood, 135 × 80 cm

The title translates as “Europe from the Ashes”.

The title translates as “Europe from the Ashes”. It was also the title of my first symphony, performed in 1993 with the Brussels Symphony Orchestra. We are still hoping to record the symphony in full soon. This painting is intended to become its cover image.

Sophia – Spirit of the Heart

2024 · Oil on canvas / wood, 130 × 81 cm

Spirit of the Heart is one of my unreleased songs, recently recorded with orchestra.

Spirit of the Heart is one of my unreleased songs, recently recorded with orchestra. Sophia means “Wisdom”. In classical painting, Wisdom is often represented by a bearded old man; here, I chose instead to depict her as a beautiful female spirit with a heart of gold.

To me, the wisdom of the heart is the closest pathway we humans possess to activate and listen the divine conscience which lies deep inside the centre of each soul. In her right hand, Sophia holds a wand of divine light as a symbol of goodness. With her left hand, she draws sacred knowledge from the Fountain of Wisdom, painted in blue, white and purple.

I love Renaissance painting, especially Leonardo da Vinci, the greatest master of painting there ever was. This work is my modest attempt to echo some of that approach in the foreground, while the background is more impressionistic. I find the strong contrast between these two approaches very intriguing and challenging – it is like creating a bridge or channel between very different visual languages – and I have used it in many of my recent works with varying degrees of success. The truth is that I am constantly experimenting and broadening my technical vocabulary as a painter.

Father Time

2024 · Oil on canvas / wood, 134 × 85 cm

Father Time watches over the slowly turning wheel of the seasons and the eternal cycles of living and dying.

Father Time watches over the slowly turning wheel of the seasons and the eternal cycles of living and dying. He represents the concept of change, and his appearance transforms with the year. In spring, he begins as a newborn child, reborn with the first rays of the sun as the snow melts. In high summer, he reaches midlife. In autumn, he enters old age. In winter, he leaves this cycle and sleeps through the transition under a deep blanket of snow.

St Francis of Assisi

2025 · Oil on canvas / wood, 146 × 87 cm

St Francis of Assisi viewed all creation as an interconnected family, referring to “Brother Sun”, “Sister Moon” and “Mother Earth”.

St Francis of Assisi viewed all creation as an interconnected family, referring to “Brother Sun”, “Sister Moon” and “Mother Earth”. His reverence for animals – famously expressed through his preaching to birds and the story of the wolf of Gubbio – helped establish him as the patron saint of nature. St Francis wrote the inspired Canticle of the Sun which has a powerful message of unity between the forces of nature.

The Alchemy of Light

2024–26 · Oil on canvas / wood, 142 × 89 cm

A white ray of light reveals all the colours of the rainbow when it travels through the prism of a crystal.

A white ray of light reveals all the colours of the rainbow when it travels through the prism of a crystal. Each photon is a messenger of love, a witness to the soul of the universe, and one of creation’s chief agents. God is Light. Light is the engine of creation. We are beings of light, destined to do good, destined to be at one with the positive force of Creation.

Forest of Wisdom

Oculus Universalis

2024 · Oil on canvas / wood, 130 × 81 cm

I believe that the universe we live in is an endless field of all-pervading, interconnected consciousness.

I believe that the universe we live in is an endless field of all-pervading, interconnected consciousness. As human beings, we are active participants in this universal game of creation. The universe is holographic by nature: all parts interact directly with all others, and this is instant. The universal mind is strangely equipped to know everything. Yet, as creatures living in the physical dimension we call Earth, our powers of vision remain extremely limited by our still relatively low level of development as a potential interplanetary species. Our minds are geared to see and understand only what we can mentally process and digest. And that is a good thing.

Here, I painted a gigantic Third Eye of the Universe. It is the eye of the soul of the cosmos, multidimensional in nature, able to see all there is, all that has been and all that will be – past, present and future.

Cataclysm

2025 · Oil on canvas / wood, 130 × 81 cm

This painting depicts an end-of-the-world scenario.

This painting depicts an end-of-the-world scenario. Our mother planet Earth has already witnessed many cosmic catastrophes in its long and chequered history. According to current knowledge, there have been five major mass-extinction events, the most recent being the demise of the dinosaurs about sixty million years ago. That event was caused by a gigantic comet or other celestial body that struck the Earth in Yucatán and plunged the planet into darkness for years. Most land animals perished. The picture also reminds one of Plato’s story of Atlantis: a high civilisation wiped out by a cataclysmic flood around ten thousand years ago.

We now stand on the threshold of a new mass extinction, but this one is entirely man-made. Since the dawn of the industrial age, we have polluted and ravaged the blue planet. Pollution has caused climate change on a massive scale, and we still face the spectre of potential atomic annihilation as a species. Our combined level of selfish ignorance knows no bounds. Unless we manage to mend our ways, the image above may one day come true.

Eleison

2025 · Oil on canvas / wood, 140 × 85 cm

Eleison is the title of a piece of music I wrote for Electric Sun in 1983.

Eleison is the title of a piece of music I wrote for Electric Sun in 1983. I have recently written a new version for symphony orchestra. I do not want to say too much about this painting, preferring to leave space for viewers to reflect on it for themselves.

From my earliest childhood, the story of Jesus was deeply important to me, although I was not brought up in a religious household. I strongly believe that Christ made the ultimate sacrifice and thereby ignited a divine spark in all of us who feel connected to one another, so that we could survive. Although many atrocious things have been perpetrated by men in the name of Christ over the centuries – all man-created institutions are prone to corruption sooner or later, and the churches of the world are no exception – but all the wrongs and crimes against humanity which were committed by followers of religion and zealots are rooted in ignorance and a twisting or misinterpreting of the original teachings. I believe the Sermon on the Mount remains the greatest teaching we have, even if it is an almost impossible one to follow.

Salvator Mundi

2024 · Oil on canvas / wood, 115 × 82 cm

This painting was never finished and, unfortunately, no longer exists in its original form.

This painting was never finished and, unfortunately, no longer exists in its original form. Only an old photograph remains. The unfortunate truth is that I experimented with the background and some of the facial features and ultimately damaged the painting beyond repair. This can happen if one is not careful, and I often paint very fast, in the heat of emotion. I recently painted the same composition again, this time with a different face of Jesus and several other altered features. The second version turned out reasonably well and is still unfinished, although I did not quite manage to recapture the power of the first original. Perhaps one day I will gather the courage to try to repair or rescue the original.

Renascentia

2024–25 · Oil on canvas / wood, 143 × 82 cm

Renascentia means “Rebirth”.

Renascentia means “Rebirth”. In this painting, the Earth is born again under the aegis of divine, creative Love. Love is a much-overused word, yet it remains the singular most powerful force in the universe. It is the divine glue that keeps all things alive within a constant cycle of renewal – the receptacle of becoming. Love and Light are, in essence, one: the foremost aspects of the Creator. Photons, the precious messengers of light are filled with divine love.

Lion Wings (Lion of Judah)

2024–25 · Oil on canvas / wood, 139 × 80 cm

I love all animals, but cats of every kind hold a particular fascination for me.

I love all animals, but cats of every kind hold a particular fascination for me. As an archetype, it does not get much more powerful than the lion. In this painting, the lion soars into space against the backdrop of the sun and an eclipse: two opposite states of the same phenomenon. Just as we must traverse and exist between the extremes of light and darkness, we are creatures made of opposites. These two aspects – the light and its absence, the dark – exist within us as well, and it is up to us to negotiate the torrents created by these opposing energies and strive for harmony.

In Christian tradition, the Lion of Judah represents Jesus Christ. In the Book of Revelation, the symbol appears directly in the vision of the heavenly throne room. In Christian iconography, this symbol is paired with the Lamb of God. While the Lamb represents Christ’s sacrifice, humility and submission, the Lion of Judah represents His ultimate power, resurrection, royalty and triumphant return.

Aquila Galactica

2024 · Oil on canvas / wood, 83 × 83 cm

I first saw this image in my mind’s eye like a flash while sitting on a train one evening headed for Düsseldorf, sometime in the early 1990s.

I first saw this image in my mind’s eye like a flash while sitting on a train one evening headed for Düsseldorf, sometime in the early 1990s. Suddenly, I saw a mighty eagle diving into a gigantic galaxy. The image in my mind was infinitely better than the painting I eventually produced, though. Perhaps I will revisit it one day.

Ocean of Emotion

2024–25 · Oil on canvas / wood, 147 × 84 cm

The ship represents our life’s journey through the many ups and downs of our individual destiny.

The ship represents our life’s journey through the many ups and downs of our individual destiny. For those, who seek enlightenment, life is a mighty challenge. The cosmic eye in the background represents our own mind’s eye, our transmitter of earthly intelligence. The multi coloured ocean represents our subconscious with all the powerful and often conflicting emotions. Our rational mind often struggles to make sense of it all – and this is the challenge we all face: achieving harmony between our rational mind which is seeking to understand things through sober and analytical reasoning on one hand – and our emotions which are often dancing to an entirely different tune. He who masters this tightrope dance and achieves unity and equanimity in himself is on the road to enlightenment.

Angel Knight’s Return

2024–26 · Oil on canvas / wood, 122 × 81 cm

This painting underwent several transformations before it found its final form.

This painting underwent several transformations before it found its final form. Angel Knight is a mythological figure from my as-yet-unreleased Requiem for an Angel. His wings can change colour depending on the nature of his mission. I painted this work as part of a triptych; two other Angel Knight paintings show different scenes from the same world.

Destiny Calls

The Song of Azazel

2025 · Oil on canvas / wood, 142 × 82 cm

I have often painted winged creatures of the light, but there are also those of the dark.

I have often painted winged creatures of the light, but there are also those of the dark. This painting depicts the fallen angel Azazel, leading humankind astray with the strange and intoxicating sounds of his harp. Through the airwaves, he injects a malevolent stream of toxic frequencies into the consciousness of humanity, seeking to draw people away from the light and into the service of darkness. It is an allegory for unseen, shadowy things that are happening in our world today.

The Sails of Charon

2025–26 · Oil on canvas / wood, 133 × 88 cm

This painting is the visual counterpart to my original composition of the same name.

This painting is the visual counterpart to my original composition of the same name. In ancient Greek mythology, Charon is the ferryman who transports the souls of the departed across the river Styx into the underworld, from which there is no return. The lyrics of my song are essentially a warning against becoming involved in dark arts, such as black magic, and against losing one’s soul in the pursuit of power. The painting is deliberately executed in an intense, primal style. Rather than concentrating on subtle detail, I experimented with rough, powerful brushstrokes in an almost post-impressionistic manner to capture the uncertainty and ambiguity of this journey.

Vanitas

2025–26 · Oil on canvas / wood, 133 × 88 cm

Vanity is one of the many traps to which the human mind has been susceptible since the dawn of time, I guess, particularly when combined with narcissism and excessive love of the self.

Vanity is one of the many traps to which the human mind has been susceptible since the dawn of time, I guess, particularly when combined with narcissism and excessive love of the self. Here we see a not-so-pretty young queen in her ivory tower of delusion. She looks into the mirror, and the peacock – symbol of illusion and vanity – stares back at her. The snow owl represents pure wisdom, but remains outside, denied access to the royal chamber. The cosmic eye watches over it all, seeing things both inside and out.

Goliath of Tomorrow

Sorcerer’s Apprentice

2024 · Oil on canvas / wood, 130 × 81 cm

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is a famous fairy-tale poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is a famous fairy-tale poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. It is a powerful story about someone who dabbles with forces he does not understand, until everything spirals out of control.

This mirrors the situation humanity now faces. We have collectively created astonishingly powerful technologies, some of which could annihilate the world many times over, yet our wisdom has not kept pace with our intellect. We are like children playing with real guns.

Walt Disney made this story world-famous through his movie Fantasia. My movie-style poster painting depicts the young sorcerer after he has conjured a multitude of forces beyond his ability to command. There is a dragon, a spaceship, an angry wizard and more. Poor apprentice! He is bewildered.
